About Keep Smile International Trade

Sixteen years moving Canadian lumber to the world

Founded in Vancouver in 2010, we connect certified British Columbia mills with buyers across North America, China and Southeast Asia — pairing local fibre knowledge with disciplined export logistics.

Our story

Trading house roots, mill-floor habits

Keep Smile International Trade was started by partners from two sides of the lumber business: international trading and BC forestry operations. The premise was simple — overseas buyers shouldn't have to choose between mill-direct pricing and trading-house service.

Today we ship up to 100 containers a month from the Port of Vancouver, drawing on a network of twelve partner mills across the BC Coast and Interior. Our team grades what we sell, walks the kilns we book, and writes the documents our buyers clear customs with.

Head office in Vancouver, with buyer-facing desks serving Shanghai and Ho Chi Minh City time zones.

Sourcing & sustainability

Certified fibre, accounted for

Every board we export starts in a legally harvested, professionally managed British Columbia forest. Chain-of-custody certification isn't a marketing line for us — it's the bookkeeping system our supply runs on.

  • FSC® and PEFC chain of custody maintained from mill intake to your commercial invoice, audited annually.
  • Kiln-dried, heat-treated programs that meet ISPM-15 without chemical fumigation.
  • Residuals recovered: trim ends and shavings from partner mills go to pellet and biomass programs, not landfill.
  • Documentation buyers can audit: certificates, claims and harvest origin available for due-diligence regimes such as the EUDR.

Export process & capabilities

From cutting list to cleared cargo

High-value orders deserve a process you can audit. Here is exactly how an order moves through our hands — terms, packaging, paperwork, lead times and quality control included.

The six steps

How an order runs

Within 24 hours

Inquiry & spec review

Send species, grades, sizes, volume and destination port. Our trading desk confirms availability and flags anything that needs clarifying — same business day for Asia time zones.

FOB / CFR / CIF

Quotation

You receive a line-item quote with grade rules, tally, packaging spec, Incoterm, validity period and an estimated production-to-arrival timeline.

Contract & deposit

Confirmation

Sales contract issued with agreed payment terms — typically T/T deposit with balance against documents, or irrevocable L/C at sight for new accounts.

Milling · grading · drying

Production & QC

Production is booked into reserved mill slots. NLGA-trained graders check the run; kiln charges are moisture-sampled and recorded against your order number.

Tally & photo report

Loading & inspection

Bundles are end-tagged and barcoded, containers stuffed and lashed at our yard. You receive a piece tally and photo report before the container gates in. Third-party inspection (SGS, BV) welcome.

Docs against payment

Shipping & documents

Cargo sails on weekly services from Vancouver. Full document set couriered or released via bank, with tracking until discharge at your port.

Commercial terms

Incoterms we quote

Quoted under Incoterms® 2020. Most buyers take FOB Vancouver or CIF destination; we'll recommend what fits your freight arrangements.

FOB Vancouver

We deliver export-cleared cargo loaded on board at the Port of Vancouver. You control ocean freight and insurance — ideal for buyers with their own freight contracts.

DOOR-TO-PORT SIMPLICITY

CFR / CIF destination

We book ocean freight to your port — Shanghai, Taicang, Ho Chi Minh, Manila, Jakarta, Los Angeles and more — adding marine insurance under CIF.

ON REQUEST

EXW / FCA mill

For buyers consolidating their own programs in BC, we can release at mill or yard with export packaging and documentation support.

Lead times

Plan against real dates

Typical production windows from contract confirmation, plus ocean transit from Vancouver. Confirmed dates are stated on every contract.

ProgramProductionOcean transit

Packaging & loading

Cargo that arrives sellable

  • Standard export bundles sized to container dimensions, steel or PET strapped with corner protection.
  • Waterproof paper wrap on kiln-dried and appearance grades; breathable wrap for green timbers.
  • End tags & barcodes on every bundle: species, grade, size, tally, order and bundle number.
  • 40' HC loading plans — typically 45–58 m³ depending on profile — with lashing and dunnage to destination-port standards.
Mixed containers available: combine species and profiles in one 40' HC to test a market without committing to full-line volume.

Documentation

The paper that clears customs

Issued with every shipment, checked twice before release.
